Justin Morgan
mid-year release

.

Sherman the Morgan Stallion has been sculpted by the successful Morgan Horse breeder, trainer and exhibitor Jeanne Mellin Herrick.
Her Sherman Morgan sculpture was so realistic that American Morgan Horse Association endorsed the Breyer model as a representative of the "ideal type" Morgan.

The sculpture is a portrait model of Sherman, son of the famous Figure, known as Justin Morgan, named after his owner and founder of the Morgan Horse breed.
Sherman, remembered for his stamina, strength and beauty, was born in 1809.
He has also been described as a "spirited chestnut stallion, competitive and colorful. Having been well known as a racer throughout Vermont and Maine, he was thought to be one of the most memorable offspring of Justin Morgan."

The mold, bearing the linear " © Breyer Reeves" stamp, was introduced to the world of Morgan horse enthusiasts in early 1987, available exclusively to members of the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) as a pre-market introduction.
He has been advertised in a 1986 / 87 AMHA flyer : " Let us introduce to you Breyer`s newest addition to their Artist Series. Fashioned after the famous son of Justin Morgan, it depicts Sherman Morgan, the first of his most outstandings sons.
Jeanne Mellin was selected by Breyer Models to produce the original sculpture from which the model was made. She has worked very closely with them during the past months to help them create an authentic image of Sherman."
Later in 1987 Sherman Morgan has been released by Breyer as a regular run model which was available until 1991 when another model from this mold was produced.
After the production of 4 different types of models the mold suffered irreparable damage in the throatlatch area which had become thin and collapsed. There have been attempts to repair this part but in 1992 Breyer decided to stop patching it and retired the mold for physical and economic reasons.
Since the mold had also suffered a break in the tail section, total reconstruction of the mold was needed - this has been done in 1999. The model`s surface has also been reworked, giving it a smoother appearance.
The tail bottom, wich used to be a single unit, has been reworked by Kathleen Moody to three free flowing sections.
Because of these changes, collectors are referring to the "old mold" and "new mold" version of Sherman Morgan. The new mold has been introduced as colorful-extravagant Carpe Diem in 2000 to celebrate the Millennium.
From time to time, Breyer paints one of the old-mold left overs from the factory for special occasions like the Breyerfest Auctions.
